Part 2: Program Summary
Provide a high level review of the program to include highlights, successes, challenges, significant changes, and significant resources needed to support the program |
---|
The Medical Assistant Program experienced some classroom challenges through COVID, with the limit of students per clinical lab. The program secured an additional classroom which allowed instructors to run clinical labs for student hands-on skills. This challenge was met with the addition of laboratory assistants to instruct in the other classroom. The program met challenges with COVID restrictions of extern site shortages with our facility partners limiting their clinic hours or closing of clinics. This was remedied by implementing clinical simulation activities and moving students to clinical sites accepting student externs. Students remained focused in the completion of their online courses and program progression. The Medical Assistant program continues to prove to meet expectations, program requirements, and target measures in all areas. The program continues to grow with enrollments and the feedback from our community partners is positive. |

---|
Since the program start, we have been increasing our number of students at a steady pace. We are now seeing the number of students in each semester enrollment and class participation stay in the recommended percentage. With the steady increase, we saw little retention efforts needed for the quarter. Students remained focused and determined to finish the program. For students who fall below the expected grade level for each course, resources are provided, then if grades continue to decline, remediation is started, and a plan is developed. The program's annual number of graduates sits at 29. |

Interpretation of Assessment findings |
---|
Students receive hands-on instruction in their lab courses 1020, 1092, 1592, and 2092. Students learn how to use critical thinking, basic assessment skills, and gain knowledge in assisting with exams and treatments for the medical office. With each lab course, after reviewing the material and readings, students apply their acquired knowledge in the lab. The next term, students then are sent to their clinical site where they demonstrate their learned skills. Our community partners are expressing the need of our students by creating more openings for our medical assistant students. |
