Part 2: Program Summary
Provide a high level review of the program to include highlights, successes, challenges, significant changes, and significant resources needed to support the program |
---|
Academic Year 2020 to 2021 included the transition of Veterinary Technology courses that had always been held face-to-face, to be held online for at least the lecture portion of coursework. This was an unexpected challenge for the instruction of concepts and skills generally taught face-to-face. There was also a change of the Learning Management system moving from Blackboard to Brightspace in January 2021 - and students and instructors needed to adjust to the new platform. There was a mixed reaction from the students with some appreciating the flexibility of the online environment, and other students challenged by the technology and requirements of online classes.
11 students did succeed in graduating in May 2021 with the Veterinary Technology AAS degree, and employment opportunities followed. There is a great need for skilled veterinary technicians to serve the veterinary profession in greater Albuquerque, and throughout New Mexico; and the CNM graduates continue to be sought after.

Summarize how your program met or did not meet the target measures based on the data above |
---|
The average class fill rate has generally been around 85%, but in Academic Year 2020 to 2021 it did drop to 82%; still well above the target threshold. This was likely due to the pandemic and online course presentation.
The retention rate has remained fairly steady at 85%; still well above the target threshold.
The annual C pass rate has averaged 66%; still well above the target threshold. In Academic Year 2020 to 2021 it did drop to 63%; possibly likely due to the pandemic and online course presentation.
The annual number of graduates over the last three Academic Years has averaged 12; above the target threshold. Even in May 2021 during the challenge of the Pandemic, the Veterinary Technology Program still graduated 11 successful technicians.
By these target thresholds the Program continues to remain strong. |
Part 4: Program Learning Outcome Analysis
Learning Outcome | Population or Course(s) Assessed | Description | Summary of Assessment Results |
---|---|---|---|
Avian, Exotics, and Small Mammals procedures: Skill: Understand the approach to providing safe and effective care for birds, reptiles, amphibians, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, and ferrets. | VT 2790: Applied Therapeutics II |
| Reviewed final grades in Spring 2021 and the 11 students had an 85% average (only 1 "C" was received). Definitely above the 71% target. |
Imaging: Skill: Safely and effectively produce diagnostic radiographic and non-radiographic images. | VT 1293: Radiology |
| Target for the VTNE 'imaging' section to be greater than the national average for first time test takers: CNM students achieved 53% average; USA average was 65%. The pandemic challenges may have affected this outcome. |
Laboratory Animal Procedures: Skill: safely and effectively handle common laboratory animals used in animal research. | VT 2790: Applied Therapeutics II |
| Reviewed final grades in Spring 2021 and the 11 students had an 85% average (only 1 "C" was received). Definitely above the 71% target. |
Laboratory Procedures: Specimen management Skill: demonstrate knowledge of proper handling and storage of specimens for laboratory analysis to ensure safety of patients, clients, and staff. Specimen analysis Skill: Properly perform analysis of laboratory specimens. | VT 2010: Clin Path IVT 2610: Clin Path II |
| Target for the VTNE 'Laboratory Procedures' section to be greater than the national average for first time test takers: CNM students achieved 71% average; USA average was 64%. |
Surgical Nursing: Patient management Skill: Understand and integrate all aspects of patient management for common surgical procedures in a variety of animal species. Procedural management Skill: Understand and provide the appropriate instruments, supplies, and environment to maintain asepsis during surgical procedures. | VT 1272: Surgical Technology |
| Target for the VTNE 'Surgical Skills' section to be greater than the national average for first time test takers: CNM students achieved 71% average; USA average was 68%. |
Interpretation of Assessment findings |
---|
In this cycle the following Program Learning Outcomes were assessed:
Avian, Exotic, and Small Mammals; Imaging; Laboratory Animals; Laboratory Procedures; and Surgical Skills
All target thresholds were strongly achieved except for the Imaging section. The Imaging section of class work (Spring 2021) was still affected by a change of course presentation due to pandemic restrictions (online for the lecture material). Also, the skill lab sessions were adjusted some due to the pandemic. In Spring 2022 the Radiology course is planned to return fully to face-to-face presentations; with hopes to increase the VTNE scores in the future for the imaging section of the exam. |
Part 5: Additional Action Plan in Support of Student Learning (If Appropriate)
Upcoming Year | Changes Planned for the upcoming year | Data Motivating this change |
---|---|---|
2021-2022 | Return the courses to face-to-face. Some assignments and assessments may remain being offered in Brightspace, but instruction will be conducted face-to-face (unless the pandemic forces a return to online only).
| Compare retention from online to face-to-face.
