Part 2: Program Summary
Provide a high level review of the program to include highlights, successes, challenges, significant changes, and significant resources needed to support the program |
---|
During the 2020-21 academic year, there were no notable changes to the curriculum, though effective for the 2021-22 academic year, some Sociology program approved electives were removed to create further distance between the Pre-law and Criminology degrees to reduce students pursuing multiple degrees instead of transferring. |

The program had stronger graduations in the last two years. We anticipate an initial drop in graduates in the coming year as a result of catalog changes that will reduce program overlap and disincentivize multiple degree acquisition. The success rate has dipped slightly during the pandemic. |

Pre-law participates in the general assessment methodology for CHSS as defined by CAT because the coursework is a more defined way to complete a Liberal Arts degree. This method takes a random, stratified sample of course sections; selected sections will have students complete an in-class, timed, writing response to a uniform prompt that will measure: 1) Problem Setting, 2) Evidence Acquisition, 3) Evidence Evaluation, and 4) Drawing Conclusions.
Six students with the Pre-law major were identified in the sample. For Problem setting, the group scored at a median of 3 out of 4, though one student scored 1, and another 2. For the remaining dimensions the group scored at a median of 2.5, where the median across students in the sample was 3.
A shortcoming of the CHSS assessment method is program-specific information, and the courses assessed are disparate and not representative of the major, so it's not possible to infer knowledge about Pre-law students and their skills in this area. |
Part 5: Additional Action Plan in Support of Student Learning (If Appropriate)

2021-2022 | It would behoove faculty teaching core courses among the program approved electives to discuss methods of assessing the skills in those classes rather than relying on the CAT gen ed assessment. This will involve faculty from the humanities and social and behavioral sciences discussing instruments or the related skills to try to arrive at a more meaningful data set for inference. Some discussion might involve what critical analysis means in the different disciplines and to determine how the content areas approach assessing this skill. | The current approach does not yield discipline-specific knowledge of student performance in the program outcomes. |
