Part 2: Program Summary

Provide a high level review of the program to include highlights, successes, challenges, significant changes, and significant resources needed to support the program
AY 20-21 marked the debut of the Native American Studies AA and featured a variety of programming to elicit student interest, such as Indigenous Futures Month (Native American History Month) and a moderated panel discussion about the degree featuring faculty and graduate students from UNM and CNM in July 2021. In the first year, at least three students declared the major for the first time. Some miscommunication about its financial aid eligibility deterred some students from declaring the major. We also posted and hired our first part-time faculty specifically for this department.

Summarize how your program met or did not meet the target measures based on the data above
During AY 20-21, the program successfully ran 5 sections of NATV 1150, with an average enrollment of 27. According to ODS dashboards, the C-pass rates for the course were 79.7, 73.6, and 79.3 percent, respectively for fall, spring, and summer. The withdrawal rate for those terms was 6.8, 11.3, and 6.9 percent, respectively. During that time, the program offered sophomore electives (NATV 2110: Sociopolitical Concepts in Native American Studies and NATV 2140: Research Issues in Native America), but the courses were canceled for insufficient enrollment. The department has received favorable publicity and marketing attention via the Mellon Grant, and has hosted a handful of information sessions for students and academic coaches, and has grown the number of NATV 1150 sections this fall to 3, so we anticipate a growing number of students to declare the major in AY 21-22.

    Interpretation of Assessment findings
Effectively, no assessment for the program took place during AY 20-21. No students with NATV declared as their major were in the sample for CHSS's CAT assessment methodology. A new cycle plan is in place to assess the program outcomes in NATV 1150, the "beginning" of the program; FUTR 1110, a program requirement; and NATV 2210, the "end" of the program. This should provide longitudinal data for these outcomes.
