Part 2: Program Summary

Provide a high level review of the program to include highlights, successes, challenges, significant changes, and significant resources needed to support the program
The Biotechnology Program began strong in its new home at the Montoya Campus with 12 students completing the program in December of 2020. Because of Covid the program did not run in Spring or Summer of 2021. A new cohort was begun in Fall of 2021 with 13 students

Summarize how your program met or did not meet the target measures based on the data above
Biotechnology's fill rate is at 80%, above the 60% fill rate target. The retention rate for Biotech is substantially higher than target (84% versus 70%). The C pass rate listed for Biotech is incorrect. The vast majority of students receive either A's or B's in the three classes, so the date presented is incorrect. The pass rate for coursework is likely closer to 98%. We have 9 graduates for the 2020 - 2021 cohort out of 12 student completing (and 15 beginning) all three classes. This is an excellent number as Covid presented many difficulties for the students, including a two semester delay between them being able to take the second and third class in the sequence.

Part 4: Program Learning Outcome Analysis

Learning OutcomePopulation or Course(s) AssessedDescriptionSummary of Assessment Results
2. Safety: Demonstrate an understanding of basic laboratory safety and the handling and disposal of biological and chemical wastes
BIOL 2720, and BIOL 2710.
    3. Nucleic Acids: Demonstrate an understanding of the basic properties of nucleic acids as well as techniques used to isolate, purify and anlayze these moules
    BIOL 2720, and BIOL 2715.
      Interpretation of Assessment findings
Lab safety skills were assessed during the Fall 2020 semester (BIOL 2720). They were not assessed in BIOL 2710 as this course did not run in Fall of 2020 or Spring of 2021. Objectively, 100% of students scored 75% or better on all final exam and lab practical questions. Subjectively, all students exhibited proper laboratory safety etiquette and asked questions if they were unsure during in-class activities. Nucleic acid skills were assessed during the Fall 2020 semester (BIOL 2720). They were not assessed in BIOL 2715 as this course did not run in Fall of 2020 or Spring of 2021. 83% of students scored 75% or better on all nucleic acid final exam questions.
