Part 2: Program Summary

Provide a high level review of the program to include highlights, successes, challenges, significant changes, and significant resources needed to support the program
As Program Director in my 7th year, it has been a challenging year for our program trying to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic. This fiscal year (be SP 2022) we were able to start moving classes from online back to a face-to-face. This presented challenges because both students and faculty were hesitant on coming back. Last fiscal year 95% of our classes were online and during this fiscal year we have approx. 85% of our classes back to in-person settings. I am incredibly proud of our part-time faculty to confront this change and restructure back to a face-to-face learning environment. The C-Pass Rate has remained the same in 2020-2021 from 72% to 72% to date. Average class size has dropped from 22.3 in 2020-2021 to 20.3 to date. Which is an average decrease of 3 students over the last 3 fiscal years and during this pandemic period. Annual number of graduate awards has remained steady at 7 students in 2020-2021 to 7 students to date.

Summarize how your program met or did not meet the target measures based on the data above
The Exercise Science AAS program failed to meet the target measure of 10 graduate awards with 7 graduates this 2021-2022 FY. This number remained the same from the prior FY however, was most likely affected by the pandemic this year now our program (beg SP 2022) is bringing back significant face-to-face classes. It is my observation that students struggled with this transition from online learning and now feeling more comfortable with face-to-face classes again. I expect to see the graduate # increase next FY. The average class size dropped a little from 22.3 students in 2020-2021 to 20.3 students to date. Average class size has dropped by an average of 2 students given the pandemic this past year. However, the program did meet and exceed target measures of 70% or above on Annual C-Pass rate for coursework with 72% to date. Average class fill rate was well above the target of 60% with 73% this fiscal year. Our program exceeded Annual Average withdrawal rates of only 11% which is well below the 30% target.

Part 4: Program Learning Outcome Analysis

  • Certification Exam
7 total graduates; 5 students attempted the ACE-CPT Personal Training Certification Exam. All students passed the test on their first try. This is a 100% pass rate. Target met at 80%
Interpretation of Assessment findings
During the last assessment report the following questions were asked and some answers were revealed:1) In the HLED 1170: Concepts of Health and Wellness class we were measuring the knowledge and attributes of a Personal Trainer. All students scored above 81% on both the mid-term and final exams showing there understanding and understanding. 2) Are our students demonstrating a high level of readiness to take and pass the ACSM-CPT, ACE-CPT, NSCA-CPT, AFAA Primary Group Exercise and/or ACE Group Fitness Instructor certification exams by successfully completing them? This info was examined and 5 of 5 students passed national certification the first time. This is a 100% pass rate above our target rate of 80% and a direct reflection on how our program is preparing students to pass the exam and be knowledgeable and confident in the fitness field. Therefore no major curriculum changes will be done in our program at this time especially to EXSC 2990. One thing that was revealing was all tests were ACE-CPT taken.

Part 5: Additional Action Plan in Support of Student Learning (If Appropriate)

Upcoming YearChanges Planned for the upcoming yearData Motivating this change
2021-2022
1. In the PHED 1460: Personal Fitness class it would be interesting to understanding how much fitness knowledge students are learning in this class. This could be evaluated by using a few quizzes throughout the term. 2. Emphasis on students taking other national certifications other than the ACE-CPT Exam. Our program will emphasize the importance of group exercise and yoga certifications. Also, our program will build-in opportunities for group certification into our curriculum.
1. In PHED 1460: Personal Fitness class the amount of student fitness was measured but that is only one outcome for this class. Fitness knowledge as a whole is the other major outcome which would need to be assessed. This class is particularly important as it provides the framework for others. Also, this class is required by all our AAS degree, Fitness Certificate, Criminal Justice, and Fire Science students. 2. Every student taking national certification at the end of the program took it with ACE (American Council on Exercise)
