Part 2: Program Summary
Provide a high level review of the program to include highlights, successes, challenges, significant changes, and significant resources needed to support the program |
---|
Highlights: In 2021-2022 new program changes went in the catalog. HMSV1150 changed from a 2 credit course required in the SAC certificate to a 3 credit course required in the degree. HMSV2290 (SAC Practicum) was terminated. HMSV2990 (SW Practicum) for degree and certificate student placements.
Successes: Student retention was better than expected in year 2 of COVID. Students seemed more at ease with online courses and Brightspace than in year one. Most faculty did an admirable job extending support and accommodation to students. Many sought out colleagues and the EDUC interim Assistant Director to brainstorm solutions and stay connected.
Challenges: In 2021-2022 HMSV felt uncertain. The Assistant Director left. An interim AD unfamiliar with HMSV arrived. We learned HMSV would move in the reorganization. HMSV students resisted returning to campus, and didn't want on-site placements. Agency partnerships suffered. MOUs held up placements that were wanted. The one 2-term FT faculty couldn't cover needs. |
Part 3: Data Review

Summarize how your program met or did not meet the target measures based on the data above |
---|
Program data indicate decline in all target measures. Turnaround strategies are needed. Student recruitment should increase with post COVID opportunities. Move to HWPS increases class capacity to 30 from 28 and 24. Faculty work hard to retain students by getting to know them in their 5 HMSV degree courses. Students identify life issues and poor advisement as reasons for withdraws.
C-Pass rate influences retention. Breakdown of HMSV students:@ 5% well prepared academically, 15% mostly prepared, and 80% are below levels in one or more areas of reading comprehension, retention, and writing skills needed.
Students in HMSV plan to transfer to 4-years schools or enter careers. Transfers need to be tracked. CNM's HMSV program is a feeder school for Social Work programs at NMHU and NMSU. We've partnered with both to provide info sessions to CNM students.

Interpretation of Assessment findings |
---|
HMSV instruction scaffolds lessons within and across courses.
Students complete increasingly more complex assignments to understand person in environment across populations, SES, cultures, and work arenas. This includes understanding environmental and societal influences on them and their professionalism. Reflective writing and research assignments are assessed. They research and analyze the 3 ethical codes associated with Human Service professions. Students they demonstrate application of ethical standards through discussions, role plays and scenario evaluations. These assignments are more difficult due to applying critical and analytical skills. Students complete reports, forms and questionnaires used in professional written communication, and role play oral communication skills. They learn cultural humility theory and use reflective writing to introspect on their cultural sensitivity, bias, and prejudice.
Work completion rates across courses: 87-96%. Competency rates: mid 70 to high 90 percentile

Part 5: Additional Action Plan in Support of Student Learning (If Appropriate)
Upcoming Year | Changes Planned for the upcoming year | Data Motivating this change |
---|---|---|
2021-2022 | Meet with HMSV faculty to discuss how faculty respond when a student is underachieving and/or struggling in class. Review college resources, possibly with student service representatives, and then discuss the benefit of standardized program strategies for referring students to services like achievement coaches, success plans, tutoring, etc. Decide with faculty if a presentation about academic success should be added the first week of class as part of orientation to class requirements. Review if what is in syllabi needs revision. | C-Pass Rates confirm what HMSV faculty experience with students' academic abilities. Many students have difficulty completing coursework due to deficits in one or more academic skill areas. |
2021-2022 | PD will seek out and attend recruitment opportunities and work with college services to advertise the program. Enlist ideas from faculty for outreach and to assist with recruitment efforts. Explain to PT instructors the emphasis on graduation. Explain to PT faculty the policy change for class capacity in HWPS and how proactive activities aim to ensure they are retained to teach and share their expertise with students. HMSV currently has committed PT faculty. Retaining them could be jeopardized if their teaching contracts are prorated due to under-enrolled courses. | Declining graduation and enrollment rates |
