Part 2: Program Summary
Provide a high level review of the program to include highlights, successes, challenges, significant changes, and significant resources needed to support the program |
---|
A. Highlights/Successes: The program has maintained college set goals throughout the 2021-2022 reporting cycle.
B. Program Retention rates for the Fall 2021-Summer 2022- 71%
C. Graduate outcomes: 9 students applied for graduation Fall 2021. 8 students applied for graduation Summer 2022. Total outcome, 13 graduated.
D. Credentialing exam outcome was 88%. There are three (3) components to the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB); radiology (RHS), infection control (ICE) and general chairside (GC) 11 students took general chairside-10 passed (91%); 11 students took RHS-9 passed (82%); 11 students took ICE-10 passed (91%)
E. Challenges: Enrollment and retention; utilizing D2L, low score on ICE HESI.
F. Significant changes: One of the components of the DANB changed in July 2022; there was an omission of dental film, conventional film processing, and quality assurance testing. These categories were not omitted on the HESI examination, therefore, some data was not relevant for comparison. |

Part 4: Program Learning Outcome Analysis
Learning Outcome | Population or Course(s) Assessed | Description | Summary of Assessment Results |
---|---|---|---|
1. Expose and evaluate radiographs, implement quality assurance procedures and radiology regulations, applying the principals of radiation safety for patients and operators and practice infection control standards for equipment, patients and operators. | DA 1593 Final Grade National Board (DANB) DA 2510 HESI Examination |
| DA 1593 (Radiology II lab course) average on final evaluation 90.8%
National Board (DANB RHS) 82% pass rate; program average performance score 451(400 being minimum score required to pass the exam)
DA 2510 HESI RHS subcategory average score was 76.4% |
2. Collect and record clinical data, perform chairside procedures, utilize appropriate chairside assistant ergonomics, prepare, manipulate and apply chairside dental materials, demonstrate an understanding of laboratory procedures and materials, describe patient education and oral health management, provide pre- and postoperative instructions, discuss prevention and management of emergencies, and discuss office operations. | DA 2090 National Board (DANB) DA 2510 HESI Examination |
| DA 2090 summative evaluations were 91% demonstrating the students ability to perform the necessary skills of an entry level dental assistant in general chairside assisting (GC)
DA 2510 HESI GC subcategory average score was 79.9
DANB GC was 91% pass rate. Program's Average Performance score was 465 (400 minimum to pass exam) |
3. Demonstrate an understanding of patient and dental healthcare worker education, apply standard/universal precautions and the prevention of disease transmission, demonstrate an understanding of occupational safety, manage infection and hazard control protocol consistent with published professional guidelines. | DA 2090 National Board (DANB) DA 2510 HESI Examination |
| DA 2090 Clinical summative evaluations were 91%
National Board (DANB ICE) subcategory pass rate was 91% Program's Average Performance Score 461 (400 minimum to pass the exam)
DA 2510 HESI ICE subcategory average score was 64.5. Further analysis shows student's low performance in the patient and dental health care worker and education category. |
4. Exhibit behaviors expected to be successful in securing and maintaining a career in the dental profession to include: punctuality, teamwork, communication skills and appropriate interaction with patients of all ages and backgrounds, respect for personal beliefs without discrimination of patient care | DA 2090 DA 1590 |

DA 2090 professional rubric scores were 89.5% |
5. Continual growth and development as a professional committed to the dental industry by participation in professional organizations and educational activities offered to dental auxiliaries while enrolled in the program. Obtaining certification as a professional by taking both national and state examinations immediately upon graduation. | National Board State Board |
| The National Board issued 10 Certified Dental Assistants (CDA's) which meant that these students passed all three components of the board exam (RHS, ICE, GC)
The State of New Mexico licensed 10 certifications in Radiation Health and Safety (RHS) which is required to administer radiation to patients. 83 % of graduates obtained licensing. |
Interpretation of Assessment findings |
---|
1. Learning outcomes were met. Assessment tools DANB and HESI, did have some disconnect due to the omission of traditional film, processing and quality assurance tests. New HESI exam should calibrate with DANB.
2. Learning objectives were met.
3. The Fall 2021 cohort still had 50% of their course work online. Infection control is one of the more challenging topics with many different agencies and protocol to be memorized. The cohorts scored low on the HESI examination but passed the national board and obtained licensing. Consider using SIMTICs simulation on disinfection and sterilization starting with the Spring 2023 cohort. Review textbook and possibly replace or supplement. Curricular changes will be made since low scores for ICE are a trend.
4. Learning objectives were met.
5. Learning objectives were met with 83% of graduates obtaining licensing and certification.
Faculty need to continue professional development centered around D2L. This learning management system is not intuitive for faculty. |
