The Communication Gen Ed program focuses on Public Speaking (1130) and Interpersonal Communication (2110), with regular but less wide-reaching Gen Ed offerings in Small Group Communication (2140), Communication for Teachers (2150), Gender Communication (2160), and Business and Professional Communication (2180). The Communication program introduces students to communication strategies and processes. This program prepares students for transfer to a four-year program in Communication or Speech, with a concentration in one or more of the following areas: Interpersonal Communication, Intercultural Communication, Organizational Communication, Public Communication, Mass Communication. Post-pandemic the program continues to offer a higher ratio of online courses to meet student demand and has piloted new modalities for delivery, such as Attend Anywhere and fusion courses. The Communication department has faced several challenges with faculty turnover, but hired two new full-time faculty members in Spring 23.

Average class fill rate is well above the 60% threshold, with an 85% fill rate for the 2022-2023 period. Likewise the average retention rate is above the 70% threshold at 91%. The pass rate for students has increased slightly over recent years, from 69% in 2020-2012 to 72% for 2022-2023. Number of 2022-2023 graduates is 44, which is greater than 10, but this represents a decrease from 2020-2021 which was 60.

    Interpretation of Assessment findings
    The Absence of assessment processes in this discipline offer a unique opportunity to rethink assessment practices. The coming cycle’s assessment activities will focus on preparation for the transition to the Assessment Academy model in Fall 2023. With the help of the Senior Director of Assessment, faculty in these programs will engage in facilitated activities and conversations designed to address faculty understanding and perceptions of the role of assessment in effective teaching and learning. Planned activities, including an Introduction to Assessment workshop and discipline-specific guided conversations, will (re)introduce concepts of informed teaching and prompt faculty to begin considering what they want to know about their teaching, student success, and the curriculum.
