Part 2: Program Summary

Provide a high level review of the program to include highlights, successes, challenges, significant changes, and significant resources needed to support the program
In 2019, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation awarded joint grant of $2 million to increase the number of students pursuing associate and bachelor’s degrees in the humanities. A press release from .January 10, 2019 notes, "Students trained in humanities-based disciplines such as English, History, Philosophy, Psychology, and Latin American Studies, among others, develop essential skills such as critical thinking, creative problem solving, interpreting and analyzing texts and data, developing innovative ideas, communicating well-informed decisions, and grappling with difficult circumstances. Increasingly, business and diverse industry leaders are identifying a need for hiring employees with the skill sets developed through humanities-engaged education." Measuring these essential skills in coordinated assessments, however, remains a promising challenge.

Part 4: Program Learning Outcome Analysis

Learning OutcomePopulation or Course(s) AssessedDescriptionSummary of Assessment Results
2a. Information and Digital Literacy: Authority and Value of Information
HUMN 1110 2110
  • Homework Assignments
Based on the the NM General Education Learning Outcome Rubric : Essential Skill: Information & Digital Literacy, "Courses that include the skill of information and digital literacy should begin to prepare students for upper division college courses, the workplace, and civic life. Informational literacy spans across genres and content within the general education core, and as such is not tied to a specific media or format." Authority and Value of Information: With a two class sample size n=37, 31 students were assessed as Proficient (3), having completed the assignment, while 5 students, missing assignment, were evaluated at No Evidence (0) 3: Proficient Recognize the interdependent nature of the authority and value of information and use this knowledge ethically when selecting, using, and creating information. Using a Different types of authorities are evaluated to differentiate between reliable and convenient information; a recognition exists that knowledge builds upon itself, and credit is attributed.
2b. Information and Digital Literacy: Digital Literacy
HUMN 1110 2110

Based on the the NM General Education Learning Outcome Rubric : Essential Skill: Information & Digital Literacy, "Courses that include the skill of information and digital literacy should begin to prepare students for upper division college courses, the workplace, and civic life. Informational literacy spans across genres and content within the general education core, and as such is not tied to a specific media or format." Digital Literacy: The ability to understand, communicate, compute, create, and design in digital environments, is somewhat a given in an online course, but nonetheless there is a wide discrepancy in knowledge, capacity and aesthetic skill. However, students were asked to cut and paste peer-reviewed articles from the CNM Library, and out of a sample size of 37, students who turned in the assignment (n =31,) were given full-credit for effort, and as such can only be assessed as Emerging (1), in with "An ability to use common digital devices and/or platforms is evident."
2c. Information and Digital Literacy: Information Structures
HUMN 1110 2110
  • Homework Assignments
Assignments suited for the Information & Digital Literacy Essential Skill can entail (1) learning and/or working with different tools for the purposes of academic research or information construction; or (2) recognizing the way information (digital or otherwise) is constructed and disseminated. 2c. Information and Digital Literacy: Information Structures. Select, use, produce, organize, and share information employing appropriate information formats, collections, systems, and applications. The second part of this assignment was asking students to sign up for a free New York Times Student Account. Beyond familiarizing themselves with the CNM Library Database Collection and peer-reviewed Academic work, this assignment component helped students explore Information & Digital Literacy beyond the library. Out of n=37, 23 students completed this pass | fail task, and again can be considered Emerging (1) : Basic features and functions of common information formats, collections, systems, and applications.
Interpretation of Assessment findings
While this represents a small sample size, it demonstrates how the Humanities builds fundamental General Education skills. As former dean Erica Volkers noted in the 2019 Mellon Grant press release quoted earlier, “Graduates of the humanities are instilled with important lifelong attributes such as empathy, ethics and social responsibility that can enhance the quality of industries and work environments." These types of collaborations with CNM libraries and applied library research practice assignments give students a glimpse of the vast work of scholars across the globe and allow students to become part of the tradition of iterative and continues research strategies. Through the free student New York Times accounts provided by CNM Libraries, we allow students to experience becoming part of a global community of individuals as they train to be leaders in their own fields. We change lives and build communities by transforming students. The Humanities builds intellectual skills for all majors.

Part 5: Additional Action Plan in Support of Student Learning (If Appropriate)

Upcoming YearChanges Planned for the upcoming yearData Motivating this change
2022-2023
A larger number of Humanities courses needs to be assessed for more robust data and analysis. Ideally, the Liberal Arts College can work cooperatively across Departments to implement the new Assessment Academy framework in the next assessment cycle and improve assessments in order to support both program and student outcomes .
A lack of planning, coordination and data is motivating this change.
