Part 2: Program Summary

Provide a high level review of the program to include highlights, successes, challenges, significant changes, and significant resources needed to support the program
HLTH 1001 is a clinical prep course blending online learning with in-person CPR skills labs. This is a short 2-week course offered in blended format with online and in-person learning. COVID brought significant challenges to the in-person portion due to the many restrictions placed on classroom learning but our group managed to implement several procedures that ensured our student's success despite the challenges. We taught the in-person sessions in split sections that -allowed us to maintain pre-pandemic enrollment caps and serve our students with the very best in CPR education and clinical competency training. Throughout, we had fewer students due to overall college enrollment levels but, like many healthcare-related courses, our numbers remained relatively high. We had to retool our Incompletes to allow for more opportunity for students not allowed on campus to make-up their missed session and we succeeded greatly in that challenge.

Summarize how your program met or did not meet the target measures based on the data above
In line with college enrollment being down in academic year 2020 through 2021, we had 1566 students total enrolled in HLTH 1001 courses. In academic year 2021-2022, enrollment was 1444 students, which is an 8% decline in enrollment in those courses. We more than tripled our graduate awards in the 2022-2023 year for the HWPS certificate when compared to the previous academic year. Enrolling in HLTH 1001 is not mandatory for the HWPS Certificate which is why enrollment in HLTH 1001 has declined but the number of certificates granted has increased. There is no other data available to measure average class fill rates, annual retention and C-pass rate.

Part 4: Program Learning Outcome Analysis

Learning OutcomePopulation or Course(s) AssessedDescriptionSummary of Assessment Results
3. Demonstrate his/her ability to apply reading, communication and math skills in school, community, and workplace activities.
HLTH 1001
  • Test or Quiz
In a random sample of 275 students over the assessment period, there is a significant improvement in pre-course knowledge compared to post-course knowledge. This was assessed by a pre-course exam and a post-course exam. The average pre-course exam score was a 68.2%, the average post-course exam score was a 94.2%.
4. Develop and apply critical thinking skills through experiential learning exercises.
HLTH 1001
  • Other
The number of students who completed the HLTH 1001 has increased slightly since pre-pandemic numbers. This number is consistent with other healthcare related programs of study.
Interpretation of Assessment findings
Overall, the HWPS certificate seems to be performing as expected. The number of students who received the certificate almost tripled from the initial assessment period. The number of students who earn a BLS certification has increased slightly from previous academic years. There is a significant improvement in student scores on post-course assessment vs. pre-course assessment. These results are, however, limited in their scope simply because HLTH 1001 is not a required course for obtaining this certificate. There is not a mandatory course for the certificate that can be used for this assessment process.
