Part 2: Program Summary

Provide a high level review of the program to include highlights, successes, challenges, significant changes, and significant resources needed to support the program
The department elected look at our Introduction to Sociology (1110) classes. The assessment instrument included a series of multiple-choice questions and two short answer questions. We collected pilot data to test the questions in fall semester 2022 and employed the same questions in spring semester 2023. The pilot study was completed in fall 2022 and looked at whether students who had access to a study guide had stronger attainment of the concepts than those who did not use a study guide. Eleven sections of 1110 offered students a study guide prior to the assessment; in 10 sections students did not get a study guide. Almost 400 students, n=397, completed the assessment. The spring 2023 semester data were analyzed independently for the face-to-face (F2F) and distance learning (DL) sections. Seven of the 9 face-to-face sections (67%) of 1110 submitted data and 11 of the 13 distance sections (69%) submitted data. Eighty-six percent of F2F students and 83% of DL students completed the assignment.

      Interpretation of Assessment findings
The fall 2022 data analysis looked at whether students who had access to a study guide had stronger attainment of the concepts than those who did not use a study guide. Eleven sections of 1110 offered students a study guide prior to the assessment; in 10 sections students did not get a study guide. Almost 400 students, n=397, completed the assessment. The data suggest that study guides did not make a significant difference in student performance. The spring 2023 semester data for 1110 were analyzed independently for F2F and DL sections. The mean percentage correct scores for the multiple-choice questions show that F2F students are typically lower than in the DL sections. The exception is the methods question that targeted the concepts of population and sample. Almost 50% of students are able to write a cogent answer for both the paradigm and sociological imagination questions with the short answer questions.
