1. Explain and promote fire protection and prevention within the community. Learners will be assessed on fire related curriculum. Assessments will include written responses and multiple choice quizzes and exams.FS 1010 Principles of Emergency Services FS 2001 Fire Protection Systems FS 2215 Firefighter I & II Theory FS 2814 fire Prevention Students will perform better in once class than the other on specific learning outcomes. I will compare quizzes and exams from 2-3 different courses that assess the same learning outcome. My threshold will be 80% and higher compared to any students that scored under 80% correct on questions assessing the particular learning outcome.

Learning Outcome (or Gen Ed Essential Skill)Summary of ResultsReflection on Focus AreaIntepretation of Results
1. Explain and promote fire protection and prevention within the community. FS 1010: Fall 2023 85% met threshold, Spring 2024 59% met threshold, Summer 2024 60% met threshold. FS 2215: Fall 2023 62% met threshold. FS 2814: Spring 2024 71% met thresholdResults were similar across all term offerings.Students are not performing as well as expected. Using an 80% threshold may be too high, however, when looking at student grades, students who scored between 70% and 79% did not make a large difference. There was little difference between face to face and online learners.

1. Explain and promote fire protection and prevention within the community.
Describe the change that was implemented.Ensure pertinent material is thoroughly covered during the term and learners have the ability to ask questions. Create discussion questions that focus on the promotion of fire protection and prevention within the community. Ensure the appropriate quizzes are being evaluated.
Type of Change
  • Change in course content
  • Grading Methodology Changes
Change in Assessment Approach or Tools?Yes. We need to ensure that the assessment tool is capturing the correct quizzes and exams.
What data motivated the change? The data shows that the learners did not meet the desired outcome.
Hypothesis about the effect the change will have? The changes should improve outcomes and provide learners with a more clear understanding of the curriculum.

Look at course curriculum, make changes as needed. Look at each specific course to determine if missing assignments are impacting results

Describe any change in student achievement observed as part of this assessment process, and what led to those changes.

No
Describe long-term changes in the program(s) that the assessment process led to, and what motivated those changes?

Yes. We need to ensure that the assessment is capturing the correct assessments/ test scores. This will be done by working closely with assessment coaches. We need to ensure that learners are turning in all assignments associated with the assessment. This will help to get more accurate results. We need to evaluate the curriculum and teaching methods to ensure our learners know and understand the material.
What did you learn about the teaching and learning of "Practicing Community" in your programs?

The role of promoting fire protection and prevention within the community is a vital task for learners in the fire science program. Unfortunately, we did not get the results we were hoping for. This prompted us to look at the course delivery in both online and in-person learning. This has also shown s that we need to have a stronger focus on Practicing Community in our entire program.
Describe any external factors affecting the program or affecting assessment of the program.
