7. Relate geology to personal, social or global impact. The success rate of students who could identify the major geologic hazard on the final exam question was 58 percent. The amount of students successfully on this question was below our target goal of 75%. These results are partly explained by the fact that some instructors may not have covered the material contained within the question.

7. Relate geology to personal, social or global impact.
Describe the change that was implemented. We need to focus on covering the assessment material in more detail in class.
Type of Change
  • Change in course content
Change in Assessment Approach or Tools? No.
What data motivated the change? Our results measuring student understanding of the topic were below the target of 75%.
Hypothesis about the effect the change will have? With more emphasis on this topic in class discussions, we hope to match or exceed our target goal.

Describe any change in student achievement observed as part of this assessment process, and what led to those changes.

Yes. The percentage of correct responses to the assessment questions improved - hence students demonstrated a greater understanding.
Describe long-term changes in the program(s) that the assessment process led to, and what motivated those changes?

Yes. As a result of this assessment process we put more emphasis on ensuring the syllabus topics were covered in a more comprehensive manner.
What did you learn about the teaching and learning of "Practicing Community" in your programs?

Within the geological sciences, practicing community is demonstrated in the way that students can analyze a geological concept that has potential major impact on the community in which they live. To this end, we have focused on assessing topics that integrate community concerns to see if students can correctly identify and analyze these topics.
Describe any external factors affecting the program or affecting assessment of the program.

We have recently hired more part-time instructors. This has led to inclusivity of evolving teaching styles and methods of instruction (in particular with the introduction of hybrid courses). This has made us consider our method of gathering assessment, which we may change in the future.
