Learning Outcome (or Gen Ed Essential Skill)Summary of ResultsReflection on Focus AreaIntepretation of Results
1. Correctly explain the U.S. and New Mexico Criminal Justice Systems, the criminal law, the law of arrest, search and seizure, and the criminal trial process.Based on the focus area of student performance solely on exam results, 89% of the students successfully met the standard by achieving a minimum score of 75% on written exams in the combined assessed courses.Although the data reflects that student results failed to meet the standard of the hypothetical analysis based solely on written exam results, 91% of students met the standard based on combined written exam and assignment results. This shows us that although the overall success rate, based on combined written exam and assignment results, of students completing LEA 1014 and LEA 1015 remains high, improvement could be made in the area of exam results.
4. Demonstrate the ability to effectively perform the responsibilities of a law enforcement officer.100% of students who participated in the lab component of LEA 1010, which consists of Officer Survival reality-based training scenarios, successfully met the standards and passed. The results support the focus area question as the students are displaying the ability to apply what they've learned and effectively perform the duties of an entry-level law enforcement officer. The results show that the instruction that students are receiving during the CNM Law Enforcement Academy is preparing them to perform the duties of an entry-level law enforcement officer and is readying them for on-the-job training with their respective law enforcement agencies.

1. Correctly explain the U.S. and New Mexico Criminal Justice Systems, the criminal law, the law of arrest, search and seizure, and the criminal trial process.
Describe the change that was implemented.Exam questions are being reviewed for clarity and rewritten. Exam analysis has identified certain questions that are chronically problematic. Poorly written questions are being removed or rewritten. Exams are being checked to ensure that they align with SLOs. Exams will also be delivered online via the CNM LMS (Brightspace) as permission has been received from the program accrediting body to allow exams to be administered through the LMS.
Type of Change
  • Other
Change in Assessment Approach or Tools? The only change with regard to assessment approach is the delivery of assessments via the LMS.
What data motivated the change?Exam results, although meeting the minimum scores, still continue to exhibit a need for improvement.
Hypothesis about the effect the change will have? The review and rewriting of exam questions should lead to student success on exams. With poorly written exam questions rewritten, students should better understand the questions which will allow them to make a more informed decision on the proper or correct answers. The delivery of exams via the LMS may also allow us to better identify problematic questions.
4. Demonstrate the ability to effectively perform the responsibilities of a law enforcement officer.
Describe the change that was implemented. The scenarios used during reality-based training are being assessed and modified in order better assess proficiency. Scenario evaluation methodology is also being reviewed in order to ensure that there are defined performance objectives and identified critical failure items. There is also work being done to incorporate a quantitative scoring system for the evaluations.
Type of Change
  • Change in course content
  • Other
Change in Assessment Approach or Tools?Changes will be made to the assessment/evaluation process. There are changes to the scenario evaluation process to incorporate a quantitative scoring system for the evaluations.
What data motivated the change?Although student outcomes during scenario performance has been meeting minimum standards, improvement can always be made. Feedback from community partners has helped identify areas where changes can be made to further improve student performance.
Hypothesis about the effect the change will have?Modifying the scenarios used during reality-based training will help ensure that students have the opportunity to display proficiency in more instructional areas received during their training.
